Anyone can eventually find your blog if your real identity is tied to it in some way. And there may be consequences. [Here are] a few simple precautions to help you maintain control of your personal privacy so that you can express yourself without facing unjust retaliation. [A combination of social and technological techniques, and legal considerations.]

CNET now has a great tutorial for learning about RSS. It includes a news section, glossary, product reviews, and a video tutorial. The tutorial is short (about four pages), and clearly describes why RSS is important and how you can use it to improve your productivity. Here is a short excerpt: Finding it hard to stay abreast of the latest news and conversations on the Web? You’re not alone. The number of sites and people…

No one can agree on what it stands for, but RSS can have a huge impact on how you stay abreast of the news and information that interests you. Rather than going through your browser's list of bookmarks every morning, you can let an RSS aggregator or news reader bring what's new straight to you. Chances are you've been to plenty of sites that feature RSS buttons or links, but you either didn't notice or ignored them. With an RSS news reader, you can add the site's RSS feed to your list of subscriptions, eliminating the need to visit the site regularly. Depending on settings at both ends, all the latest information from the site's feed will be pulled into your RSS news reader. FeedDemon and NewsGator came out on top. [I use Newsgator.]

Chairman Bill Gates on Thursday told top corporate executives that Weblogs and the way they are distributed can be used as business communication tools. Blogs, short for Weblogs, have been around for several years, serving as online journals for Web-savvy disseminators of information ranging from personal ramblings, product reviews, to social commentary. The growth in the number of blogs, and those who read them, however, is attracting greater attention from businesses as a means to communicate more directly with their employees, partners and customers. That's due in part to the way that blogging has driven the adoption of yet another technology, called Real Simple Syndication (RSS). [Couldn't agree more! The iWay-Safety.com "news and views" content is a group of blogs also offering RSS feeds - those XML buttons available in each news channel. Download a free (usually) RSS reader and your in business to get any number of information feeds without filling up your email inbox. The majority of news comes in that way. If you're interested in tapping my (RSS) news sources directly, drop me a line.]

However plans are to replace these with links to "home" pages for each channel that contain specific resource and information links, as well as brief explanations or definitions of the main subject of the channel, e.g. PRIVACY. For some channels this will not be appropriate, e.g. INTERESTING OR AMUSING STUFF. Of course each channel home page will have a link to the news posts for that channel as does this main news page and the channel news pages themselves.

The Net giant plans to test the syndication technology for its personalization tools, giving people the ability to automatically receive news and information feeds from third parties. [CNET News.com - The Net] [This news item is the result of using the exisitng Yahoo RSS (syndication) news feed. Imagine "newspapers" of the (near) future customized to fit your personal information needs! Is this an example?]

A reader has asked - WHY? (My blog, weblog, newsletters, ...) Call it my diary - which I could never sustain until now. Call it my view of 21st century technology and how it intertwines with our lives. Call it more stuff we must do to protect and preserve our stuff - in this age - mostly information. Call it self-indulgent theraphy. Is there any other? Do you like it? Is it useful? Entertaining? Insightful? Visionary? Perceptive? ... Feel free to choose your own (complimentary) adjective. More feedback! Please. Since I'm unlikely to be discouraged, disheartened, disillusioned, disinclined, .... it would be entertaining to be disputed or discussed ... but not otherwise "dissed". Happy to hear from you regardless ...

I am migrating posts from weblogs I maintained using another
technology. Consequently, for the next week or so ( 12/18 - 12/25),
items will appear out of date order. Their relevance and impact should
be high enough (so I hope!) that this should not matter.

My goals are to keep you informed and entertained with information and commentary about developments involving logical and physical security; privacy; and technology affecting individuals, residences, soho's and small organizations. I follow a variety of subjects. Readers have indicated that they prefer these subjects be presented in separate categories (channels) rather than one big one.
Links to the news channels are in the box on the right of this page.
Note: Some news articles "age out" over time (eventually they all will) resulting in broken links. Access to full NY Times Articles requires logging in to the Times web site. Access is free with registration. "Aged out" articles require a payment for access.
If you think there is content lacking OR you are seeing too much on a subject, let me know! I summarize or extract from many public sources. Some news items speak for themselves (in my opinion) while others demand or beg for commentary (also in my opinion!). Anything that looks like [my comments not source's] is exactly that.
I use this Main News page to present news about iWay-Safety.com news only.
